I have been a geographer and scientific researcher for the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) since 1989. I am the head of the research group Multiscale Geographic Analysis of Global Change (https://iegd.csic.es/es/org-structure/analisis-geografico-multiescalar-cambio-global), which has just renewed its seal of excellence in the last external evaluation of CSIC groups. I am a Spectro-radiometry and Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory, SpecLab member (https://iegd.csic.es/es/laboratorios-iegd).
My scientific interest is articulated around 4 lines of research using Geographic Information Technologies. My main line of research is the study of the effectiveness and sustainability of terrestrial, coastal, and marine protected areas and their environments, considering a transversal approach that considers the environmental, economic, social, and governance dimensions.
The analysis of land use and land cover is my permanent and transversal line of research, focused on land use mapping, change detection, and simulation of future scenarios. I analyze the ecological and socioeconomic impacts caused by land use changes that have occurred and are expected in the future.
In the line of forest fires, I have analyzed the human risk of occurrence, I have assessed the landscape in the context of ecological vulnerability, and I have collaborated in the study of the impact of land use changes that occurred and are expected to occur on the probability of occurrence of forest fires.
Finally, I am interested in sustainability assessment. At the local level, I have led the design and implementation of Agenda 21 in several counties in the province of Cuenca, both in the scientific phase of environmental audit and in the participatory phase of development of local action plans. At the European level, I worked in the SUSTAINMED project.
I was an associate professor in the Geography Department of the University of Alcalá between 1989 and 2000. I was vice-president of the Spanish Association of Remote Sensing and the Geographic Information Technologies group (Spanish Association of Geographers) president.
